For the victims of the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, the United States’ main humanitarian aid agency has pledged $85m (£70m).

Shelter, cold weather gear, food, water, and healthcare are all on the list of priorities that will be supported by USAID grants.

Over 20,000 people have died, prompting governments to send rescue teams and relief to the area.

Supplies are urgently required, rescuers say, or more people may perish in the cold.

USAID released a statement on Thursday saying that “hygiene and sanitation assistance” is being provided to ensure the safety and health of the population.

Samantha Power, the director of the agency, has sent a Disaster Assistance Response Team (Dart) to the Turkish cities of Adiyaman, Adana, and Ankara to help with the relief efforts.

There is about 200 person total on the squad, including 159 search and rescue workers and 12 dogs trained to help in times of crisis. Around 170,000 pounds of gear, including machinery to move rubble, has been brought in by the organization.

Aid deputy director Isobel Coleman stated to CBS News on Thursday that American troops are in the region to help transport supplies via helicopter due to the severe devastation of roadways.

“A chill can be felt in the air. Seasonally, this is winter. A safe place to live is essential for human survival. There are basic needs such as nutrition, hydration, and sanitation “she reported hearing from Ukraine about the seismic zone.
Governments from all over the world have promised aid and rescue workers in the wake of Monday’s 7.8 magnitude earthquake.

Canada has committed to double donations up to C$10 million ($7.4m; £6.1m).

India, Germany, S. Korea, Israel, and many more countries have also dispatched rescue teams.

On Thursday, the WHO issued a warning that “many individuals” are living “in the open, in increasing and awful conditions.”
